Precision shooting at major competitions follows a well-defined, multi-stage format, testing players’ consistency and resilience in the face of the varied challenges of the different workshops.

a) Qualifications

Each player performs two complete rounds of 20 shots (5 workshops × 4 distances). Scores from both rounds are added together to determine the qualifiers. The top 16 players generally advance to the final phase. In the qualifying rounds, every shot is an opportunity to score points and stand out from the other competitors. Consistency is essential to get through this crucial stage.

b) Final stages

The final stages are played out in the form of direct confrontations. Players compete by firing the same shots as in the qualifying rounds, and the best score determines who advances to the next round. In the finals, the pressure is higher, as each shot can be decisive. Knowing how to handle this pressure is one of the keys to success.

c) Time limit

Each player has 15 minutes to complete his 20 shots. Respecting this time limit is crucial to avoid any penalties. Time management is as important as accuracy. It is therefore advisable to strike the right balance between speed and concentration to maximize the chances of success.

To succeed in precision shooting, it’s essential to master technique, train regularly and manage the pressure of competition. Here are detailed tips for every aspect of precision shooting.

a) Gesture and posture

  • Foot position: Keep your feet shoulder-width apart to ensure a smooth shot. Good foot position also ensures better weight distribution, which is crucial for accurate shooting.

  • Arm alignment: Make sure your throwing arm is aligned with your shoulder for a smooth, accurate swing. Incorrect alignment can cause the trajectory to deviate, making the shot less effective.

b) Specific training

Training is the key to success. Recreate situations similar to those in competitions and practice each workshop to improve the accuracy of your shots. Alternate between short but intense sessions and longer ones to work on endurance. Use templates and markers to ensure accurate training conditions.

c) Managing pressure in competition

Managing pressure is often the difference between a good player and an excellent one. Here’s how to handle it:

  • Deep breathing: Before each shot, take a few seconds to breathe deeply and calm down. Good breathing helps oxygenate the brain and reduce stress.

  • Visualization: Imagine the perfect shot, the ball hitting the target, before you throw. Visualization is a powerful technique for programming your body to make the perfect shot. Repeat this process before every shot to boost your confidence.

To enhance your performance, certain accessories can be very useful:

  • Shooting jig: To place target balls accurately and reproduce competition conditions. A good jig will enable you to prepare your shots accurately and get your brain used to different configurations.

  • Target and throwing mats: These mats help you mark shooting zones and ensure that distances and rules are respected. Using standardized mats will give you a constant reference point and improve the consistency of your training.

Precision shooting in pétanque is a demanding, technical discipline that requires practice, effective stress management and good technique. By following these tips and practicing regularly with the right accessories, you can progress and excel in competitions. The aim is to stay focused, precise and manage stress optimally, whether you’re in the qualifying phase or the final. Good luck, and to your balls! Keep improving, because every shot is an opportunity to do better and get closer to the level of the world’s best pétanque players.
